Tailor's measurement book, 1828-ca. 1840.

Measurement book of an unidentified tailor, 1828 - ca. 1840. The page count includes a gathering of unbound pages of the same material. The book gives customers' names and measurements, sometimes with some additional details about the styling of their clothes. The flyleaf of the book carries some names and addresses in London, and one in Leicestershire: Thomas Barsby, Sileby, nr. Mountsorrel, who may be the writer of the book. The first half of the book gives customers' names and measurements, but no addresses, though one is noted as being in Woodhouse, probably the village of that name near Sileby. This section of the book contains orders dated between 1828 and 1831. The author was evidently a Quaker, since he identifies the months by number in his dates rather than using their names. In the second part of the book, beginning with a page headed America, he is in New York City, and usually gives the addresses of his customers, who include Israel Corse, John Cromwell, Samuel Willets, Elias Hicks and Preserved Fish. Orders in this section are undated.
